The Phase 3 was the final evolution of the 916 Spider, facelifted inside and out for 2003 with a revised nose, new tail lamps, a completely redesigned dashboard, and the 3.2-litre Busso V6 replacing the 3.0.

What Changed

The front end gained a deeper grille with a more prominent Alfa shield. The tail was subtly revised. The interior was substantially upgraded with a new dashboard, improved materials, and a modern look that aged the earlier cars overnight. The 2.0 JTS direct-injection engine replaced the Twin Spark — a move that brought improved emissions but also the direct-injection engine’s reputation for carbon build-up and reliability concerns. The 3.2-litre V6 produced 240bhp and remains one of the finest engines Alfa ever installed in any car — smooth, torquey, and possessed of a spine-tingling exhaust note. A run-out Special Edition of just 80 UK cars added 17-inch alloys and black leather.

Buying

Phase 3 cars are the rarest 916 Spiders. The 3.2 V6 is a genuine collector’s item with values rising steadily. The 2.0 JTS is less desirable than the Twin Spark it replaced, due to the engine’s reliability reputation. The improved interior makes the Phase 3 the most pleasant 916 to live with daily. Production ended in 2004, replaced by the heavier, GM-platform Brera Spider that followed in 2006.
