Alfa Romeo Spider Generation / Variant Price Guides
The Alfa Romeo Spider is one of the longest-running sports car nameplates in history. From the Pininfarina-styled Duetto of 1966 through four series of evolution to the modern 939-series of 2006, the name has always meant an open-top Alfa with character to spare.
The Classic Spider (1966–1993)
Pininfarina’s original design went through four distinct series over 27 years. The round-tailed Duetto gave way to the Kamm-tail Series 2 in 1970, which remains the most visually balanced version to many eyes. The Series 3 Aerodinamica of 1982 added rubber bumpers and Bosch injection. The Series 4 of 1990 finally integrated the bumpers into cohesive body-coloured panels and added power steering. All used the Alfa Romeo twin-cam four-cylinder in 1.3 to 2.0-litre form, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The general rule is to buy the best car you can afford regardless of series — condition trumps vintage every time.
The 916 Spider (1995–2006)
A clean-sheet design by Pininfarina on a modified Fiat Tipo platform, the 916 swapped rear-wheel drive for front-wheel drive and the classic twin-cam for Twin Spark and Busso V6 engines. The 2.0 Twin Spark is the most common; the 3.0 and 3.2 V6 cars are genuine rarities. The electrically operated hood is a potential trouble spot — spare release motors are virtually unobtainable.
The 939 Spider (2006–2010)
Built on a Brera platform shared with GM, the 939 Spider offered 2.2 and 3.2-litre JTS petrol engines plus a 2.4 JTDm diesel. It was heavier and less agile than the 916 but more refined. .
