The Honda S2000 is arguably the finest naturally-aspirated roadster of its era. It boasts a 2.0-litre VTEC four-cylinder producing 240bhp at 8,300rpm (the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated production engine at the time), rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual, and a 9,000rpm redline that no other production four-cylinder has matched. The S2000 was produced from 1999 to 2009 and remains among the most rewarding driver’s cars ever built.
The Car
The AP1 (1999–2003) used the F20C 2.0-litre producing 240bhp at 8,300rp – 120bhp per litre from a naturally aspirated engine using VTEC with individual throttle bodies. The AP2 (2004–2009) used the F22C 2.2-litre at 240bhp with a broader torque curve and revised suspension. The AP1 is the more raw and rewarding; the AP2 the more balanced. A limited-edition CR (Club Racer) used a fixed roof and stiffer suspension for track focus. Around 110,000 S2000s were produced worldwide.
Buying
The S2000 has been appreciating for a decade and shows no sign of stopping, particularly low-mileage AP1s. VTEC solenoid and oil pressure are the mechanical checks. Roof condition on higher-mileage cars. Accident history check is essential as the S2000’s RWD handling was known to catch inexperienced drivers out.
