The Ginetta G4 is the car that established the Walklett brothers’ Ginetta Cars as a credible British sports car manufacturer. It did so in the guise of a lightweight, fibreglass-bodied two-seater using Ford mechanicals that offered genuine race-winning performance at kit car prices. The G4 was produced in multiple series from 1961 to 1969 and then revived from 1981, with the later cars using progressively more modern Ford engines while retaining the essential lightweight formula.
The Car
The original G4 used Ford 997cc and 1,498cc engines in a tubular steel spaceframe chassis with a fibreglass body weighing around 490kg. The G4 dominated its class in British club racing throughout the 1960s. The Series IV G4 of the revival period from 1981 used the Ford Zetec engine. The G4’s exceptionally light weight and direct handling made it a natural racing car. As such, more G4s have competed in British motorsport than any other Ginetta model.
Buying
The original 1960s G4 is a significant British sports car and values have risen as the car’s racing heritage is better appreciated. The revival G4s are more practical and more available. The Ginetta Owners Club is the specialist resource.
