The Ginetta G15 was the road-going Ginetta, a compact coupe using the Hillman Imp’s rear-mounted 875cc engine in a fibreglass body that provided an enclosed, weatherproof alternative to the open G4 for buyers who wanted Ginetta’s lightweight handling in a car that could serve as everyday transport. Around 795 were produced between 1967 and 1974.
The Car
The G15 used the Hillman Imp’s 875cc overhead-cam aluminium four-cylinder in a rear-mounted configuration. This is the same basic layout as the Imp but in a lighter, lower body with substantially better aerodynamics. The coupe body provided genuine two-seat accommodation with a modest boot. The G15S used the Sunbeam Stiletto version of the Imp engine with twin carburettors for around 55bhp; modest in isolation but effective in a car weighing just over 500kg.
Buying
The G15 is a charming and increasingly collectible British sports car. The Imp engine requires specific maintenance knowledge, particularly as the aluminium block is sensitive to overheating. Fibreglass body condition and spaceframe inspection for corrosion are the priorities. The Ginetta Owners Club provides comprehensive support.
