The GAZ-69 was the Soviet Union’s light utility vehicle, a four-wheel-drive truck produced by the Gorky Automobile Plant from 1953 to 1972 that served as the standard military and civilian off-road transport across the Soviet bloc, Cuba, North Korea, and numerous developing nations. The GAZ-69 fulfilled the same role in the Eastern bloc that the Land Rover Series filled in the West: practical, durable, and built for conditions where road surfaces were a suggestion rather than a guarantee.
The Car
The GAZ-69 used a 2,112cc four-cylinder producing 55bhp with a three-speed gearbox and two-speed transfer case providing four-wheel drive. Two body styles were produced: the GAZ-69 eight-seat with rear-facing bench seats, and the GAZ-69A five-seat with a conventional forward-facing rear bench. The body was steel over a separate ladder chassis. Over 600,000 were produced, including licensed production in Romania (ARO) and North Korea. The GAZ-69 was replaced by the UAZ-469 in 1972.
Buying
The GAZ-69 is a rare and historically interesting vehicle in the UK, although primarily of interest to military vehicle collectors and Cold War enthusiasts. Parts availability is limited outside Russia and Eastern Europe.
