The Ford Zodiac was the luxury British Ford, the top of the Consul/Zephyr hierarchy, the car that Ford of Britain offered to buyers who wanted chrome, whitewall tyres, and two-tone paint without paying Jaguar or Rover prices. The Zodiac was the car that took comfortable British families to the south of France in the 1950s and early 1960s and brought them home again in reasonable comfort.
The Car
The Zodiac Mk1 and Mk2 used the Zephyr’s six-cylinder with enhanced trim, two-tone paint, and equipment that included a heater and screen washers as standard; luxuries that were optional on lesser Fords. The Mk3 Zodiac of 1962 was dramatically larger; the Mk4 Executive of 1966 introduced the V4 and V6 engines that would define the next generation of Ford performance cars. The Zodiac was discontinued in 1972 alongside the Zephyr, replaced by the Granada.
Buying
The Mk2 Zodiac in two-tone paint is the most celebrated specification. The Mk3 Executive is the most capable car. Convertible Zodiacs converted by Abbott are the rarest and most valuable.
