The Ford Zephyr was the six-cylinder British Ford. It was the car that sat above the four-cylinder Consul and below the luxury Zodiac in the three-tier hierarchy that defined Ford of Britain’s large car range from 1950 to 1972. The Zephyr was the police car, the motorway cruiser, and the family car of the aspiring British middle class through three generations and two decades.

The Car

The Zephyr Mk1 of 1951 used a 2,262cc six-cylinder; the Mk2 of 1956 grew to 2,553cc; the Mk3 (Zephyr 4 and Zephyr 6) of 1962 offered both four and six-cylinder options with a new body on a longer wheelbase. The Mk3 Zephyr 6 with the 2,553cc engine is the most usable and most desirable standard variant. The Zephyr was replaced by the Granada in 1972 when Ford unified its European range.

Buying

The Mk2 Zephyr is the period classic. The Mk3 Zephyr 6 is the more capable car.
