The Ford Torino of 1968 to 1976 replaced the Fairlane as Ford’s intermediate muscle car. This is the car that Clint Eastwood drove in Gran Torino and that Starsky and Hutch made famous in its red-and-white striped specification. The 1970 Torino Cobra with the 429ci Super Cobra Jet V8 is one of the most powerful and most collectible Ford muscle cars.

The Car

The Torino used the intermediate platform with engines from the 250ci six through the 429ci and 351ci Cleveland V8s. The 1970 Torino body, and the SportsRoof fastback in particular, is the most handsome of the production run. The Cobra and Torino GT packages designated the performance models. NASCAR success with the Torino Talladega (a special aerodynamic version) added competition credibility. Emissions regulations progressively reduced power through the 1970s.

Buying

The 1970 Cobra with the 429 Super Cobra Jet is the investment-grade Torino. The Torino GT in SportsRoof body is the accessible muscle car. The Starsky & Hutch connection adds a modest premium.
