The Ford Thunderbird was Ford’s personal luxury car launched in 1955 as a two-seat convertible competing with the Corvette, then growing into a four-seat grand tourer. This era “T-bird” defined the personal luxury class for a decade. The 1955–1957 two-seat Thunderbird is one of the most celebrated American cars ever built; the 1961–1963 Bullet Bird is the most dramatic; the later cars became progressively less distinctive.

The Car

The original 1955–1957 Thunderbird used the 292ci and 312ci Y-block V8 in a two-seat body that outsold the Corvette substantially. The 1958 switch to four seats created the personal luxury category. The 1961–1963 Bullet Bird used a unitised body with a distinctive pointed nose and a full-width rear light bar. The 1964–1966 models grew larger and heavier. The Thunderbird name continued through to 2005 in various forms of diminishing distinction.

Buying

The 1955–1957 two-seater is the investment-grade Thunderbird. The 1961–1963 Bullet Bird is the design statement. Later cars are affordable personal luxury.
