The Ford Taunus was Ford of Germany’s primary model range from the 1950s through to the 1982 merger with the Cortina to create the Sierra. The Taunus range was a series of rear-wheel-drive saloons and estates that competed directly with the Opel Kadett and Ascona in the German market. The Taunus is less well-known in the UK than the Cortina but was mechanically related, particularly in the later V4 and V6-engined generations.
The Car
The Taunus name covered multiple generations from the rounded 1950s models through to the TC-series (1970–1976) and the final TC80 (1980–1982). The P-series of the 1960s used the V4 engine. The TC2 of 1976–1982 is essentially the German version of the Cortina Mk IV/V, sharing platform and body. Left-hand drive is standard on all Taunus variants.
Buying
The Taunus is primarily of interest to German Ford enthusiasts. The TC2/3 shares many components with the Cortina. German Ford Taunus clubs provide the specialist support.
