Ford Sierra Generation / Variant Price Guides
The Ford Sierra replaced the Cortina in 1982 and caused consternation. The aerodynamic body, designed under Uwe Bahnsen, was so dramatically different from the angular Cortina that dealers reported customer resistance and the “jelly mould” nickname persisted for years. History has been kinder: the Sierra was a genuine step forward in aerodynamics and packaging, and the RS Cosworth variants are among the most celebrated performance Fords ever made.
The Range
The standard Sierra (1982–1993) used Pinto and Zetec engines in saloon, hatchback, and estate bodies. The Sierra XR4i (1983–1984) added the bi-plane rear spoiler and V6 power. The Sierra XR4x4 (1985–1990) used permanent four-wheel drive. The RS Cosworth (1986–1992) used the Cosworth YB turbocharged engine for 204–224bhp. The RS500 (1987) was the homologation special with 224bhp and just 500 built.
Buying
The RS500 is the investment. The RS Cosworth the performance icon. The XR4i the accessible V6. Standard 2.0 Ghia estates are practical and rapidly disappearing.
