The sixth-generation S550 Mustang of 2015 to 2024 was the Mustang that went global. It was the first available in right-hand drive, with an independent rear suspension replacing the live axle for the first time, and officially sold through Ford dealers in the UK, Europe, and Asia. The 5.0-litre Coyote V8 producing 450bhp in the GT specification gave British buyers their first opportunity to buy a new V8 Mustang from a Ford showroom.
The Car
The S550 used the 2.3 EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo and the 5.0 Coyote V8 in coupe and convertible bodies. The Shelby GT350 used a flat-plane-crank 5.2-litre Voodoo V8 at 526bhp and was the most rev-happy Mustang engine ever produced. The Shelby GT500 used a supercharged 5.2-litre at 760bhp, the most powerful production Mustang ever. The Mach 1 used the GT’s 5.0 with GT350 handling components. The Bullitt returned in 2018 with a 460bhp 5.0 in Highland Green.
Buying
The GT with the 5.0 Coyote and manual gearbox is the definitive UK-market Mustang and the car British buyers had waited fifty years for. The Shelby GT350 is the track driver’s choice. The Bullitt the collector’s edition.
