typical price 17 October, 2026
The third-generation Fox-body Mustang of 1979 to 1993 revived the Mustang’s performance credentials after the Mustang II’s compromises. It provided the 5.0-litre ‘Windsor’ V8 that became one of the most celebrated American performance engines of the 1980s. The Mustang GT 5.0 of 1987 with 225bhp was the car that restored the Mustang’s reputation; the SVO turbocharged four-cylinder of 1984 proved it could be something else entirely.
The Car
The Fox-body used 2.3 four-cylinder, 2.8 and 3.8 V6, and the 5.0 Windsor V8 from 150 to 225bhp depending on the year. The GT 5.0 with its five-speed manual is the definitive Fox Mustang. The SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) used a turbocharged 2.3-litre producing 200bhp with four-wheel disc brakes and adjustable suspension, the result was the most driver-focused Mustang of the era. The Cobra of 1993 was the final Fox-body performance model. The hatchback body is the sporty choice; the convertible the cruiser.
Buying
The 1987–1993 GT 5.0 with five-speed manual is the definitive specification. The SVO is the connoisseur’s Fox. The 5.0 Windsor is one of the most accessible V8s to maintain.
