Ford Mustang Generation / Variant Price Guides
The Ford Mustang created the pony car class when it launched on 17 April 1964. It was a compact, affordable, customisable sports coupe that sold 22,000 units on its first day and over one million in the first two years. Lee Iacocca conceived it; the American public made it the most successful automotive launch in history. Seven generations have tracked the Mustang from the long-hood short-deck original through the malaise era, the Fox-body revival, and the current sixth-generation car that has brought the Mustang to the UK market for the first time as an officially imported right-hand-drive vehicle.
The Generations
The 1st Gen (1964–1973) is the iconic original. The 2nd Gen (1974–1978) downsized. The 3rd Gen (1979–1993) introduced the Fox body. The 4th Gen (1994–2004) modernised. The 5th Gen (2005–2014) went retro. The 6th Gen (2015–2024) added independent rear suspension and RHD. The 7th Gen (2024–) is the current car.
Buying
The 1st Gen fastback is the investment. The 6th Gen GT the accessible V8 muscle.
