The Mondeo Mk I of 1993 to 2000 took the 1994 European Car of the Year title and stands as one of the most significant European saloons of the decade — a front-wheel-drive family car with a multi-link rear suspension, 16-valve Zetec engines, and handling that was demonstrably better than the Vauxhall Vectra and Peugeot 406. The ST24 and ST200 V6 variants proved the chassis could handle serious performance.

The Car

The Mk I used Zetec engines from 1.6 to 2.0-litres alongside the Duratec 2.5 V6. The ST24 used the 2.5 V6 with 170bhp; the ST200 a 200bhp version of the same engine. Hatchback, saloon, and estate bodies. The ST200 was the first Mondeo to demonstrate that the platform could handle genuine performance. Ford’s development programme for the Mk I cost £700 million — at the time, the most expensive car development programme in Ford of Europe’s history.

Buying

The ST200 is the collector’s Mk I. The 2.0 Zetec is the practical daily. Rust in the sills and rear suspension mounts needs inspection on older cars. Ford
