The Ford Model Y of 1932 to 1937 was the first Ford designed specifically for the European market — a small saloon produced at Ford’s Dagenham plant that became the cheapest closed car available in Britain when it was offered at £100 in 1935. The Model Y was the car that established Ford of Britain as a volume manufacturer independent of Detroit’s product planning.
The Car
The Model Y used a 933cc sidevalve four-cylinder producing 23bhp — modest but adequate for British roads. The body was a four-door saloon of upright proportions with running boards and a separate chassis. At the £100 price point, the Model Y undercut every competitor and sold in enormous numbers. A two-door variant and the Model C (a longer-wheelbase derivative) expanded the range. Around 160,000 Model Ys were produced at Dagenham and Cork.
Buying
The Model Y has a devoted following through the Ford Y & C Model Register. Parts availability is reasonable through club channels. A solid, running Model Y is a charming and historically significant British Ford. Ford
