The Ford Model T is the car that changed the world. Between 1908 and 1927, Henry Ford produced over fifteen million of them, invented the moving assembly line to do so, paid his workers enough to buy the cars they were building, and in the process created mass-market motoring, the American middle class, and the modern industrial economy. Every car that followed, regardless of marque, nationality, or price, exists downstream of the Model T’s world-shifting achievement.
The Car
The Model T used a 2,893cc four-cylinder side-valve engine producing 20bhp, with a two-speed epicyclic gearbox operated by foot pedals – there was no conventional clutch or gear lever. The planetary gearbox confuses modern drivers; once understood, it is elegant and durable. The body evolved across nineteen years of production from a brass-era open tourer to the enclosed Tudor and Fordor sedans of the final years. The T was available in any colour the customer wanted, as long as it was black – a policy implemented in 1914 to accelerate production.
Buying
The Model T is among the most well-supported veteran cars in the world. Parts availability is comprehensive, the club network enormous, and the mechanical simplicity makes home maintenance realistically practical. The Ford Model T Register is the primary UK resources.
