The Ford Model A of 1927 to 1931 replaced the Model T with a car that was conventional where the T had been eccentric; a sliding-gear manual gearbox, conventional pedals, four-wheel brakes, and a 3,285cc four-cylinder producing 40bhp. It sold nearly five million units in four years and established the template that American motoring would follow through the 1930s.

The Car

The Model A was available in an extraordinary range of body styles including the Tudor sedan, Fordor sedan, coupe, roadster, phaeton, cabriolet, station wagon, and pickup. The roadster and phaeton are the most desirable open styles. The three-speed sliding-gear manual was conventional for its era. Four-wheel mechanical brakes were a significant safety improvement over the Model T’s rear-only arrangement. Approximately 4.8 million were produced worldwide.

Buying

The Model A has one of the most comprehensive parts and club networks of any vintage car. Open body styles command premiums. The Ford Model A Club GB provides excellent technical support. A well-maintained Model A is a reliable and rewarding vintage touring car.
