The Ford Model 40 of 1933 to 1934 was the continuation of the flathead V8 that Henry Ford had introduced in the 1932 Deuce — the first affordable V8 automobile, using a 3,622cc (221ci) sidevalve V8 producing 75bhp that could be purchased for $500. The flathead V8 created American hot rod culture: the engine’s simplicity, its responsiveness to modification, and its availability in millions of Ford cars made it the foundation of every speed shop in the country.
The Car
The Model 40 used the flathead V8 in a revised body that smoothed the 1932 Deuce’s lines. The 1934 Model 40B received further refinements. The flathead V8 would remain in production in various forms until 1953, powering everything from Ford passenger cars to trucks and military vehicles. The 1933–1934 bodies are the second-most-popular hot rod platforms after the 1932 Deuce.
Buying
Original unmodified Model 40s are rare — the hot rod community consumed most survivors decades ago. The flathead V8 is comprehensively supported. Ford
