The Ford GPW was the Ford-built version of the Willys MB Jeep, the Second World War quarter-ton 4×4 that became the most recognised military vehicle in history. Ford produced approximately 277,000 GPWs between 1942 and 1945 at the Rouge River plant under licence from Willys-Overland, contributing more than half the total Jeep production for the Allied war effort.

The Car

The GPW used the same 2,199cc Go Devil four-cylinder as the Willys MB, producing 60bhp with a three-speed manual and two-speed transfer case for four-wheel drive. Ford’s production differences from the Willys include a different script on the casting marks and specific Ford parts numbers. The GPW and MB are mechanically interchangeable and many surviving vehicles are mixed assemblies of both manufacturers’ components after decades of military and civilian service.

Buying

The G503 Vehicle Club in the US is a hugely useful resource. A documented Ford GPW with correct Ford stampings commands a premium over mixed-assembly Jeeps.
