The Ford Galaxie was the full-sized American Ford, the flagship that competed head-to-head with the Chevrolet Impala for the title of America’s favourite family car through the late 1950s and 1960s. The Galaxie 500 and Galaxie 500XL with the 427ci V8 were genuine performance cars hidden in full-sized saloon bodies, winning the 1963 and 1965 NASCAR championships.

The Car

The Galaxie used Ford’s full-sized platform with engines from the 223ci six to the 427ci FE V8. The 1963½ Galaxie 500 lightweight with the 427 high-riser was a homologation special built to win NASCAR. The Skyliner retractable hardtop of 1957–1959 is the most mechanically extraordinary Galaxie with a folding metal roof that stowed in the boot. The 1964 Galaxie 500XL convertible is the quintessential full-sized American classic.

Buying

The 500XL convertible with the 390 or 427 is the performance-collector specification. The Skyliner is a specialist proposition. Standard Galaxie 500 sedans are the accessible entry.
