The Ford Fairlane was the mid-sized American Ford of the late 1950s and 1960s — named after Henry Ford’s Fair Lane estate in Dearborn, and positioned between the full-sized Galaxie and the compact Falcon. The 1964–1965 Fairlane Thunderbolt with its 427ci high-riser V8 is the drag-racing legend; the standard 289ci and 390ci Fairlanes are the accessible muscle-era cruisers.

The Car

The Fairlane used the intermediate platform that Ford introduced for 1962 — shorter and lighter than the full-sized cars but large enough for six-cylinder and V8 engines up to the 427ci. The 1966–1967 Fairlane GT and GTA used the 390ci V8 in the most attractive of the model’s body styles. Around 460,000 Fairlanes were produced in 1966 alone. The Torino replaced the Fairlane name from 1970.

Buying

The Thunderbolt is an investment-grade drag car. The GT/GTA with the 390ci is the accessible performance Fairlane. Rust in the lower body and floors is the primary concern. Ford
