The Ford Econoline was the American full-sized van which competed with the Chevrolet G-Series and Dodge B-Series for the commercial and conversion van market from 1961. The first-generation forward-control Econoline of 1961–1967 is the most distinctive; the later full-sized vans became the foundation of the American conversion van and campervan industry.

The Car

The first-generation Econoline used a compact forward-control layout with the Falcon’s 144ci six-cylinder. The second generation from 1968 moved to a conventional front-engine layout and progressively grew to accommodate the 302, 351, and 460ci V8 engines. The 1975–1991 E-Series became the standard platform for luxury conversion vans and campervan builds.

Buying

The first-generation forward-control van is the collector’s piece. Later E-Series vans are practical and affordable.
