The Ford Crown Victoria covered two distinct eras: the 1955–1956 Fairlane Crown Victoria with its distinctive chrome roof band, and the 1992–2011 body-on-frame sedan that served as America’s default police car and taxi for two decades. Both are significant in different ways; the 1950s car as a style icon, the modern car as one of the most durable American sedan ever built.
The Car
The 1992–2011 Crown Victoria used the 4.6-litre Modular V8 in a body-on-frame Panther platform with rear-wheel drive and a column-shift automatic. The Police Interceptor version included heavy-duty cooling, strengthened suspension, and calibrated for pursuit driving. Around 1.4 million Crown Victorias were produced. The 1955–1956 Crown Victoria with its stainless steel roof strip is a 1950s design landmark.
Buying
The 1955–1956 is the collector’s Crown Victoria. The modern Police Interceptor is one of the most durable and affordable large V8 sedans available.
