The Cortina Mk V of 1979 to 1982 was more of a development on the MK IV rather than an entirely new car. It gave us a facelifted body with revised front and rear styling, improved interior, and the same Pinto engine range. It was the last Cortina before the Sierra replaced the nameplate in 1982. Buyers knew it was the end of the line and bought accordingly.

The Car

The Mk V used the same Pinto engines and platform as the Mk IV with revised front-end styling (a deeper grille and horizontal headlamps) and an improved dashboard. The Ghia specification continued as the luxury choice. The Cortina 80 limited edition marked the 1980 model year. Production ended in July 1982 after 4.3 million Cortinas had been produced across all five generations.

Buying

The Mk V Ghia is the comfortable classic. Standard models are surprisingly scarce as most were used up to and beyond their limit, and subsequently scrapped. The Mk V was the last opportunity to own a rear-wheel-drive Ford family saloon before the front-wheel-drive era.
