Ford Cortina Generation / Variant Price Guides
The Ford Cortina is the defining British family car and one that outsold everything from 1967 to 1982. A Cortina of one form or another appeared in every street, every car park, and every family photograph of the era, and they gave Ford of Britain its commercial dominance for two decades. Five marks traced the Cortina from the original to the final Mk V before the Sierra replaced it. The Cortina was to 1970s Britain what the Model T was to 1920s America: the car that defined a generation’s relationship with motoring.
The Generations
The Mk I (1962–1966) established the name. The Mk II (1966–1970) broadened the range with the Coke-bottle styling. The Mk III (1970–1976) grew larger with the TC body. The Mk IV (1976–1979) harmonised with the German Taunus. The Mk V (1979–1982) refined the Cortina to its ultimate conclusion.
Buying
The Lotus Cortina Mk I is the investment. The GT and GXL specifications across all marks are the enthusiast’s choices. Standard 1300 and 1600 Cortinas in solid condition appear undervalued.
