The Ford Corsair of 1963 to 1970 was Ford of Britain’s executive saloon. It was a larger car than the Cortina and used the V4 engine in a body styled with American-influenced sharp edges that earned it the nickname “the little Thunderbird.” The 2000E luxury specification with its Rostyle wheels and vinyl roof is the most collected variant.
The Car
The Corsair used the Essex V4 engine in 1.5 and 1.7-litre forms, later gaining the 2.0-litre V4 for the GT and 2000E. The V4’s inherent roughness was partially offset by the engine’s compact dimensions. The 2000E specification (black vinyl roof, Rostyle wheels, and upgraded interior) is the executive Ford of its era. A Corsair estate was also available. Around 310,000 were produced.
Buying
The 2000E is the collector’s Corsair. The V4 engine’s roughness is a characteristic rather than a fault. Rust in the body is significant on all survivors.
