The Ford Anglia is one of the most beloved British Fords, spanning two eras of British motoring from the upright pre-war-derived E04A of 1939 through to the distinctive reverse-rake rear window 105E of 1959 that became famous worldwide when it flew in the Harry Potter films. The 105E Anglia with its overhead-valve engine was the car that modernised Ford of Britain’s small car range and sold over a million units.

The Car

The 105E Anglia of 1959–1967 used a new 997cc overhead-valve engine producing 39bhp (replacing the ancient sidevalve that had served since the 1930s) in a body with the reverse-rake rear window that was styled by Ford’s American design team and remains immediately recognisable. The 1200 Super used the 1,198cc Cortina engine for improved performance. The earlier 100E Anglia of 1953–1959 used the sidevalve engine in a more conventional body. Around 1.08 million 105Es were produced.

Buying

The 105E is the Anglia to seek; the reverse-rake window and overhead-valve engine make it a genuinely satisfying classic to own and drive. Rust in the lower body and chassis rails requires inspection. The Harry Potter connection has boosted recognition in younger generations but not dramatically inflated values.
