Fisker Karma Price Guide

The Fisker Karma of 2011 to 2012 was the first luxury plug-in hybrid. It was a striking four-door grand tourer designed by Henrik Fisker (formerly of BMW and Aston Martin) that used a General Motors 2.0-litre Ecotec turbo as a range-extending generator alongside a 20.1kWh lithium-ion battery powering two rear-mounted electric motors producing 403bhp combined. The Karma arrived before the Tesla Model S and promised to prove that sustainable motoring and automotive beauty were not mutually exclusive.
The Car
The Karma used a series-hybrid arrangement. The 2.0-litre turbo acted primarily as a generator to charge the battery, which powered the rear-mounted electric motors. In Stealth mode the car ran on electric power alone for approximately 32 miles; in Sport mode the petrol generator and electric motors worked together for 403bhp and a 125mph top speed. The body was designed by Fisker himself and remains one of the most visually striking four-door cars of its era — long, low, with a solar-panel roof that trickle-charged the battery. Around 2,450 Karmas were produced before Fisker Automotive entered bankruptcy in 2013.
What Goes Wrong
The Karma’s A123 Systems battery packs were the subject of a recall for potential coolant leaks that could cause fire — ensure any Karma has had the recall completed. The battery management system software requires specific expertise. Replacement battery packs were produced by Wanxiang (who acquired A123 Systems) – availability is limited. The GM Ecotec engine is well-supported through standard channels. Electronics and infotainment age poorly. Specialist Karma knowledge is essential for any significant maintenance.
Buying
The Karma is a fascinating piece of automotive history — the first luxury PHEV, produced in tiny numbers by a company that did not survive. Battery condition and recall compliance are the primary purchase requirements. The design remains striking; the drivetrain requires specialist support that is increasingly difficult to source. Values are modest relative to the car’s visual impact and historical significance. Fisker
