Fiat X1/9 Price Guide

The Fiat X1/9 is the mid-engined sports car that democratic pricing made accessible — a transversely mounted engine behind the seats, a targa roof, and handling that genuine mid-engine balance provides, at a price within reach of ordinary buyers. Bertone designed it, Bertone produced it, and Bertone eventually sold it under their own name after Fiat discontinued it. The X1/9 proved that mid-engine sports cars need not cost Ferrari money.
The Car
The X1/9 used the 128’s 1,290cc four-cylinder initially, upgraded to the 1,498cc unit from 1978 that transformed the car’s usability. The mid-engine layout gave neutral handling that the 850 Spider’s rear-engine arrangement could never match. Bertone’s body featured a flat underside contributing to aerodynamic stability at speed. The Bertone X1/9 of 1982–1989 continued after Fiat stopped production, using the same 1.5-litre engine with fuel injection from 1983.
What Goes Wrong
Rust is the X1/9’s defining structural challenge — the sills and floor corrode severely, and the targa roof aperture’s sealing can allow water ingress that accelerates interior floor corrosion. Inspect the chassis rails carefully. The twin-cam requires belt changes at regular intervals.
Buying
The 1.5-litre injected cars are the most usable. A solid body is more important than any mechanical consideration. The Bertone-era cars are slightly better-built. Fiat
