The Fiat Topolino — Little Mouse — was the car that put Italy on four wheels, a sub-500cc city car produced from 1936 to 1955 that gave ordinary Italian families access to personal transport for the first time. Designed by Dante Giacosa, who would go on to shape Fiat’s product range for forty years, the Topolino was technically accomplished for its size: a water-cooled four-cylinder engine, independent front suspension, and a hydraulic braking system, in a package that weighed just 535kg.
The Car
The 569cc four-cylinder produced 13bhp — enough for 85km/h. Three series covered the production run: the 500A (1936–1948), 500B (1948–1949) with updated engine, and 500C (1949–1955) with a more modern body featuring integrated headlamps. A two-seat open Barchetta variant and a three-door estate Belvedere were also produced. Around 520,000 Topolinos were built across all three series.
Buying
The Topolino is a charming and historically important Italian classic. Parts availability through Italian specialist clubs is reasonable. The Fiat Club Italia and the Registro Fiat Storico are the authentication resources.
