The second-generation Fiat Panda of 2003 replaced the original’s utilitarian simplicity with a more conventional city car that retained the Panda name’s association with practicality and value. The 4×4 variant continued (the only city car available with four-wheel drive at the time) and the Cross added raised suspension and plastic cladding for an SUV-influenced appearance.
The Car
The second-generation Panda used 1.1, 1.2, and 1.4-litre petrol engines alongside 1.3 Multijet diesel. The 4×4 used a similar Steyr-Puch-derived transfer case as the original. The 100hp Sport used a 100bhp 1.4-litre for modest performance and instantly won plaudits. Interior quality was significantly improved over the first generation.
Buying
The 4×4 is the most collectible second-generation Panda. The 1.3 Multijet is the economy diesel choice for real-world usage. The 100HP is an indisputable modern classic and genuinely fun.
