The Fiat Cinquecento of 1991 replaced the 126 as Fiat’s entry-level city car. It was a conventional front-wheel-drive supermini rather than the rear-engined city car it succeeded, produced initially in Poland at the FSM factory. The Cinquecento Sporting with its 1.1-litre engine was a genuinely entertaining small car; Abarth-tuned versions even competed in one-make motorsports championships.

The Car

The Cinquecento used 704cc and 899cc engines in standard form and the 1,108cc Fire unit in the Sporting from 1994. The Abarth Cinquecento used the same 1.1-litre in tuned form for motorsport use. Despite its modest power, the Cinquecento’s light weight and willing engine made the Sporting genuinely fun. Production moved to Poland where costs were lower.

Buying

The Sporting is the recommended specification. These are not yet considered an equal to their classic namesake (the Fiat 500), nor their predecessors, but it is likely only a matter of time. Rust affects all surviving examples in varying degrees.
