The Fiat 850 of 1964 replaced the 600 with a slightly larger rear-engined car; a 843cc engine producing 34bhp in a body that offered four seats with improved comfort and a top speed of around 120km/h. The 850 Spider by Bertone is the most elegant Italian open car at an entry-level price point.
The Car
The 850 range covered the standard saloon, the 850 Special, the 850 Sport Coupe, and the 850 Sport Spider. The last two were designed by Bertone’s Giorgetto Giugiaro and among his finest early works. The Spider used the 903cc engine from the 850 Special producing 52bhp in a body weighing just 675kg. Around 140,000 Spiders were produced between 1965 and 1973.
Buying
The 850 Spider is the collector’s car from this family, the Giugiaro design has aged extraordinarily well. Rust is severe. The 850 Sport Coupé is the enclosed alternative.
