The Fiat 600 Multipla of 1955 to 1965 was arguably the world’s first people carrier. A minicar with six seats arranged in two rows, the driver positioned over the front wheels, and the 600’s rear engine providing a flat floor throughout. It predated the Renault Espace by thirty years and achieved the same essential concept in a package one third the size.
The Car
The 600 Multipla used the 600’s rear-mounted engine in a lengthened, raised body with the driver positioned at the very front; forward control that maximised interior space in minimal exterior dimensions. Six adults sat in genuine comfort. A taxi version was widely used in Italian cities. Around 130,000 were produced. The Multipla’s influence on people-carrier design is incalculable.
Buying
The 600 Multipla is a historically significant car of genuine charm. Structural integrity of the forward-control cab area requires careful inspection.
