The Fiat 509 of 1925 to 1929 was a smaller, more affordable alternative to the 501. It was Italy’s first true small car, using a 990cc four-cylinder engine in a body available as a tourer, saloon, cabriolet, and sport variant. The 509 was influential in establishing the template for Italian small car production.
The Car
The 990cc overhead-camshaft engine was technically advanced for a small car of the mid-1920s. The 509A Sport version used twin carburettors and produced around 22bhp. Around 92,000 were built. The 509’s commercial success funded Fiat’s expansion into the compact car segment that the Topolino would later dominate.
Buying
The 509 Sport is the most interesting variant for enthusiasts. Pre-war Italian specialist knowledge is required.
