The Fiat 508 Balilla of 1932 to 1937 (and its derivatives through 1947) was the car that defined Italian small car design in the pre-war period. It housed a 995cc four-cylinder engine and was available as a saloon, convertible, and the stunning 508S Spider built by specialist coachbuilders including Ghia and Zagato. The Mille Miglia saw 508s competing regularly through the 1930s.
The Car
The 508 Balilla used a 995cc four-cylinder producing around 20bhp in standard form and significantly more in the 508S and 508C competition variants. The 508C Millecento of 1937 used an enlarged 1,089cc engine and updated styling that prefigured post-war Italian design. Zagato, Ghia, and Viotti bodies on the 508S are the most collectible variants.
Buying
The 508S and 508C with coachbuilt bodies are serious collector pieces. Standard saloons are more accessible. Pre-war Italian specialist expertise is essential when working on these cars.
