The Fiat 501 of 1919 to 1926 was the car that relaunched Fiat as a mass-market manufacturer after the First World War. It was an affordable four-cylinder touring car that brought personal motoring within reach of the Italian middle class and sold in substantial numbers across Europe. It was Fiat’s first genuinely mass-produced car and the foundation of the company’s post-war commercial success.
The Car
The 501 used a 1,460cc four-cylinder side-valve engine producing around 23bhp. A five-seat touring body in the conventional post-war style. The 501S Sport version used a higher-compression engine for competition use. Around 45,000 501s were produced across the production run. The 501 was succeeded by the 509 in 1926.
Buying
Any surviving 501 requires pre-war Italian specialist expertise. The Fiat Club Italia is the primary resource.
