The Fiat 500 R of 1972 to 1975 was the final classic 500. The R stood for Rinnovata (renewed) and represented the most technically complete version of the original design. The R used the same 594cc engine from the 126 that replaced it, producing 23bhp and raising top speed to 105km/h, giving the 500 realistic autostrada capability for the first time. It was the last development of a design that had been in production for fifteen years.

The Car

The additional power transformed the 500’s character on faster roads. The R is visually almost identical to the F but can be identified by its slightly wider rear track, the revised engine cover, and internal changes to accommodate the larger engine. Only around 334,000 Rs were produced, significantly fewer than the F, making it the rarest of the four classic 500 generations.

Buying

The R is the most capable classic 500 and, given its lower production numbers, the rarest. The 594cc engine is preferable to the earlier 499.5cc units for everyday use.
