The Fiat 500 F of 1965 to 1972 is probably the ultimate classic 500, the generation produced in the largest numbers, with the most developed specification, and the one most associated with the car’s cultural image. The F introduced external door hinges visible from outside the car, giving it a subtle visual distinction from the D, and received progressive improvements through its long production run. If someone says they own a classic 500, it is most likely to be an F.

The Car

The F used the 499.5cc air-cooled twin from the D in various states of tune, producing 17.5 to 18bhp. The F’s long production run from 1965 to 1972 means it is the most numerous classic 500 and the most commonly available today. A Lusso (luxury) variant from 1968 added a padded dashboard and other refinements for buyers who wanted a slightly more sophisticated specification. The Giardiniera estate continued alongside. By 1972 approximately 3.7 million 500s had been produced in F and earlier specifications combined.

What Goes Wrong

Rust in the floor and lower body is the primary structural concern across the 500 range. The fabric roof deteriorates and is best replaced preventively rather than repaired. The air-cooled twin’s cooling ducts must be clear. The non-synchromesh first gear requires double-declutching for smooth downchanges; a technique that becomes second nature but surprises uninitiated drivers.

Buying

The F is the accessible classic 500. It is the most parts-supported, most club-supported, and most commonly available specification. A solid body with an engine that runs cleanly is the starting point. The R that followed is mechanically superior but rarer.
