Fiat 500 Generation / Variant Price Guides

The Fiat 500 is the most important small car ever produced. It was, originally, a rear-engined city car that Dante Giacosa designed to give the Italian working class access to private motoring for the first time. The original 500 ran from 1957 to 1975 across four named generations, then was revived with monumental success as the modern 500 in 2007 and the fully electric 500e in 2020. The original’s design (the round eyes, the simple curved surfaces, the compact dimensions) was so right that the 2007 revival needed only to reference rather than reproduce it to succeed. Both are icons of Italian automotive design.

The Classic Generations

The Nuova of 1957–1960 was the original two-door. The D of 1960–1965 introduced a bigger engine and roll-back canvas roof. The F of 1965–1972 is the most numerous and most commonly available. The R of 1972–1975 used the larger 594cc engine from the 126 as the 500’s final update.

Buying

The classic 500 is one of the most rewarding small classics available; simple enough to maintain at home with basic tools, small enough to park anywhere, and charming enough to cause smiles wherever it goes. Rust is significant; a solid body is always the main priority.
