The Fiat 1400 of 1950 was the first unitary-construction Fiat, the first with a monocoque body rather than a separate chassis. This was a technical milestone that made Fiat’s large saloon lighter, stiffer, and quieter than the body-on-frame construction it replaced. The 1400 also introduced the styling language that would characterise Italian saloon cars through the 1950s.
The Car
The 1400cc four-cylinder produced 44bhp in a monocoque body styled by Fabio Luigi Rapi. The 1400A of 1954 received an updated engine. A diesel variant was also available, which was unusual for a private car of the early 1950s. The 1400 was replaced by the 1500 in 1961, though commercial variants continued until 1992. The coachbuilt cabriolet by Fissore and Stabilimenti Farina are the most collectible derivatives.
Buying
The 1400 is an underappreciated milestone in Italian automotive history. Rust is comprehensive on survivors.
