The Fiat 130 was Fiat’s attempt at a prestige executive saloon. It came with a 3.2-litre V6 housed in a body by Fiat’s own design centre that competed (with limited success) against the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes W108.

The 130 Coupé by Pininfarina, however, is one of the most beautiful Italian four-seat cars of the 1970s. It remains a genuinely significant design that deserves more attention than it typically receives.

The Car

The 130 used a 2,866cc (later 3,235cc) V6 producing 165bhp. The saloon body was conventional and slightly austere; the Pininfarina Coupé of 1971 was extraordinary. A formal four-seat coupé of remarkable elegance designed by Paolo Martin. Only 4,491 Coupés were produced. The Italian government used 130 saloons as official cars.

Buying

The 130 Coupé by Pininfarina is the car to seek; significantly undervalued relative to its design quality and rarity. RHD Coupé survivors are akin to the waste products of rocking horses. The saloon is affordable and practical. V6 parts are increasingly scarce across the entire range.
