The Fiat 128 of 1969 was one of the most influential cars ever made. It was the first front-wheel-drive car with a transversely mounted engine and gearbox, side-by-side, driving the front wheels via unequal shafts. This is the configuration that Giorgio Quaroni and Dante Giacosa pioneered and that every front-wheel-drive car in the world subsequently adopted.
The Car
The 1,116cc twin-cam four-cylinder produced 55bhp in the 128 1100 and 75bhp in the 128 1300 Sport. The transverse front-wheel-drive layout gave exceptional interior space for the exterior dimensions. The 128 Coupé and 128 3P (3-porto, 3-door) coupé bodies followed the saloon. The 128 Rally of 1972 was the high-performance variant. Around 3.1 million 128s were produced, making this one of Fiat’s most commercially successful models.
Buying
The 128’s historical significance is enormous; its rust resistance was not. Survivors in solid structural condition are rare. The Rally specification is the most desirable, with the 3P following closely behind.
