The Fiat 127 of 1971 was the successor to the 850 and the car that brought front-wheel drive to the subcompact class. It was a transversely engined three-door hatchback that anticipated the supermini format five years before the Ford Fiesta arrived. Car of the Year in 1972 was a shoe-in for the innovative 127.
The 127 Sport used a 1,050cc engine producing 70bhp and was genuinely quick for a car of its size and price. The protoype for the ‘warm’ hatch?
The Car
The 903cc and 1,050cc engines drove the front wheels through a five-speed gearbox in the sump. The hatchback body (practical, light, and well-packaged) sold in enormous numbers across Europe. Around 3.7 million 127s were produced.
Buying
The 127 Sport is the performance choice. Rust is comprehensive on all survivors; a solid 127 in any specification is increasingly rare.
