The Fiat 1100 family covered the most important period of post-war Italian motoring. The nameplate covers a series of small saloons and variants produced from 1937 to 1969 that carried Italian families through the post-war reconstruction years and established Fiat’s dominance of the domestic market. The 1100-103 of 1953 with its modern three-box body was the first properly modern Italian family saloon.
The Car
The 1100cc four-cylinder engine was the thread connecting multiple body styles across three decades. The pre-war 508C Millecento begat the post-war 1100E and 1100-101, then the crucial 1100-103 of 1953 with its integrated headlamps and modern proportions, and finally the 1100D and 1100R of the 1960s. The 1100 TV (Turismo Veloce) sport variants used twin carburettors and higher compression. The 1100-103 Familiare estate is the most practical and most commonly surviving variant.
Buying
The 1100-103 in saloon or estate form is the accessible classic. TV variants command premiums. Rust is likely to be a significant concern on all surviving examples.
