The Ferrari F430 of 2004 to 2009 (the Spider continued through until 2012) was the 360 significantly developed. The package included 490bhp from a 4.3-litre V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft that produced a high-revving, acoustically distinctive character unlike any previous Ferrari V8. The e-diff electronic differential and the manettino steering wheel switch that adjusted chassis settings were significant innovations. The F430 is the most driver-focused of the naturally-aspirated mid-engine V8 Ferraris.
The Car
The 4,308cc V8 used a flat-plane crankshaft (unusual in a road car, more common in racing engines) producing 490bhp at 8,500rpm and an exhaust sound unlike any other production car. The e-diff electronically controlled differential distributed torque variably between the rear wheels. The manettino switch covered snow, low grip, sport, race, and CST-off settings. The F430 Scuderia of 2007, with 510bhp and 100kg removed from the standard car, is up there with the pinnacle of any naturally-aspirated, mid-engine Ferrari.
Buying
The Scuderia is the most desirable F430; values have been rising steadily. Annual cam belt changes must be budgeted for, as on all V8 Ferraris of this era. The flat-plane crank V8’s character justifies the F430 over the 360 for buyers who value engine quality.
