The Dino 208 GT4 was the Italian-market Dino 308 GT4 with a smaller 1,991cc V8 engine. It was a response to Italy’s punishing tax regime on engines above 2.0 litres that produced a car of frustrating performance but considerable rarity. The 208 was produced from 1975 to 1980 and remained a domestic Italian curiosity for most of its production life.

The Car

The 208 GT4 used a bored-down version of the 308’s V8 producing 170bhp; significantly less than the 255bhp of the 308 version, in a car that weighed approximately the same. The engine modifications to reduce displacement were engineering compromises that affected both performance and character. The later 208 GTB and 208 GTS received a turbocharged version producing 220bhp, transforming the car’s character. Standard 208 GT4s remain rare outside Italy.

Buying

The 208 GT4 is primarily of interest to collectors seeking completeness in the Dino/Ferrari range. The normally aspirated i modest output is a significant limitation.
