The Ferrari California of 2008 to 2017 was Ferrari’s front-engined GT convertible. It competed in a different market segment from the brand’s usual mid-engine sports cars, targeting buyers for whom the California lifestyle of the name represented effortless open-top touring rather than circuit performance. It was the first Ferrari with a folding metal roof, the first with a dual-clutch gearbox, and the first to use direct injection. A California T variant with a turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 replaced the naturally-aspirated car from 2014.
The Car
The California used a 4,297cc direct-injection V8 producing 460bhp (front-mounted, rear-wheel drive) with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The power-operated three-piece folding metal roof opened or closed in 14 seconds. The 2+2 configuration provided occasional rear seats. The California T of 2014 used the 3,855cc twin-turbo V8 producing 560bhp. The Handling Speciale package on later cars firmed the suspension for a more driver-focused experience.
Buying
The California T is the performance recommendation as the turbocharged engine transforms the car’s character. The naturally-aspirated California is the relaxed touring choice. The folding roof mechanism requires periodic maintenance. Ferrari
